Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has protested in Dhaka against the government’s decision to increase electricity prices only three months after pledging not to raise them for two years. The announcement came on Thursday, prompting a demonstration near the north gate of Baitul Mukarram, where Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar criticized the move.
Porwar stated that the power minister had previously assured citizens that electricity prices would remain unchanged for two years, but the government broke that promise. He accused the authorities of disregarding the people’s mandate from a recent referendum and urged them to curb corruption instead of raising prices.
Jamaat-e-Islami described the government’s decision to raise fuel and electricity prices as anti-people and vowed to continue protests against the policy.

Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem warned that northern Israel would not remain safe if Israeli attacks on Lebanon persist. In a statement reported on June 4, 2026, he said that as long as Lebanese civilians and border villages face Israeli military strikes, the areas across the border in Israel will also be under threat.
Qassem rejected any attempt to link Hezbollah’s military presence to broader political negotiations. He stated that connecting the group’s deployment to issues such as ceasefire or Israeli troop withdrawal is unacceptable. According to him, Hezbollah will not accept any political pressure or conditional arrangements regarding its role or positioning.
The remarks came amid rising tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border, which have recently intensified. The report noted that Israel had not issued an immediate response to Qassem’s comments.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has intensified vigilance along the Ranisankail, Haripur, and Pirganj border areas of Thakurgaon following concerns over a possible pushback by India’s Border Security Force (BSF). Although local sources have circulated information suggesting such a move, no official confirmation has been issued so far.
According to local accounts, groups of men, women, and children have reportedly gathered in the border region of Uttar Dinajpur district in West Bengal, raising fears they might be forced into Bangladesh. BGB has increased patrols and surveillance across the border to prevent any illegal entry or pushback attempts. The commander of the 50 BGB Battalion in Thakurgaon stated that the force remains fully prepared to respond to any such situation.

India extended a red-carpet welcome to Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez on Thursday during her official visit to New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Rodríguez aimed at strengthening commercial relations between the energy-dependent India and the oil-exporting South American nation. Rodríguez, who assumed leadership after former socialist president Nicolás Maduro was detained by U.S. forces in January, leads a country that holds about 17 percent of the world’s crude oil reserves.
Before the meeting, Rodríguez and Modi exchanged greetings outside Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the discussions would further reinforce cooperation between the two countries. Rodríguez’s visit comes as India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, seeks to expand crude imports from Venezuela amid supply disruptions caused by conflict in the Middle East.
Upon her arrival in India on Wednesday, Rodríguez expressed optimism about having productive discussions and said she aimed to explore areas of cooperation that would help meet the urgent needs of the Venezuelan people.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has called on citizens to remain united to thwart all forms of enemy conspiracies aimed at destabilizing the country. In a message delivered on Thursday, June 4, he emphasized that national solidarity is essential to confront external pressures and internal divisions. The statement was issued on the 37th death anniversary of former Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini, according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency cited by Anadolu.
Khamenei warned that Iran’s adversaries are waging a hybrid war combining military and psychological tactics. Without naming any country, he suggested that after failing militarily, enemies are now attempting to sow division within Iranian society. He stressed that unity between the people and state institutions is the strongest defense against such threats.
The appeal comes as tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated following recent clashes, described as the most serious since a ceasefire took effect in April. Efforts toward a lasting agreement continue, with U.S. President Donald Trump expressing optimism about progress on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and limiting Iran’s nuclear program.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has withdrawn the increased electricity tariff for residential consumers using up to 75 units, known as lifeline customers. The decision was announced on Thursday afternoon through an official notice, following concerns about the impact of higher rates on marginal consumers.
Earlier, the Power Division had requested BERC to reconsider the revised electricity tariff. The commission had held public hearings on May 20 and 21 after receiving proposals from distribution companies to adjust retail rates. Using its authority under the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Act, 2003, BERC had redefined wholesale, transmission, and retail tariffs. However, the approved rates did not reflect the Power Development Board’s proposal for lifeline consumers, prompting the Power Division’s intervention.
Citing the government’s commitment to improving living standards for low- and lower-middle-income families, the Power Division argued that the revised tariff conflicted with national policy. In response, BERC decided to restore the previous rate for lifeline consumers based on the Power Development Board’s earlier proposal from May 3, 2026.
